About this course

Iron deficiency in pregnancy not only causes problems for the mother, it can have negative consequences for the baby, too.

In this presentation, Specialist Haematologist and Obstetric Physician, Dr Renee Eslick, discusses the importance of iron in pregnancy, how we can determine who is at risk of deficiency and what can be done to ensure adequate iron supplementation. Importantly, she will also share practical tips and suggestions on how to improve the tolerability and effectiveness of oral iron supplementation, as well as advising when an intravenous iron infusion is the more appropriate option.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the significance of iron in pregnancy, including its role in maternal and foetal health
  • Evaluate the criteria for assessing individuals at risk of iron deficiency during pregnancy, including relevant diagnostic tools and methods for identifying those who may require iron supplementation
  • Implement strategies to optimise the tolerability and efficacy of oral iron supplementation during pregnancy, with an understanding of when intravenous iron infusion may be a more suitable intervention
