About this Presentation

Iron deficiency, both with and without anaemia, is extremely common and underdiagnosed. Oral iron therapy is an effective way of treating iron deficiency if the patient is motivated and can tolerate it. Alternate-day oral dosing is appropriate if iron deficiency is not severe and especially if there are side-effects from daily dosing. It is very important to advise patients how to maximise iron absorption from both their diet and from oral therapy, and what foods, nutrients and medications decrease absorption.
