The provision of self-collection is an alternative choice to clinician collected cervical sampling within the National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP) from 1 July 2022. This presentation explains the advantages of universal self-collection and discusses the eligibility and ineligibility criteria for self-collection within the updated NCSP. It also describes the processes for self-collection of a low vaginal sample and how to explain it to patients, and helps improve your understanding of the updated low, intermediate and higher risk pathways within the updated screening guidelines.
About the Expert
Prof Deborah Bateson
Deborah Bateson is Professor of Practice at The Daffodil Centre in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at The University of Sydney and formerly Medical Director at Family Planning NSW. Deborah has worked as a clinician, researcher and educator in sexual and reproductive health for around 20 years with a focus is on equitable access to evidence-based contraception, safe abortion care and cervical screening services nationally and internationally. She is Chair of National Cervical Screening Program Self-Collection Implementation Committee, Deputy Chair of the Quality and Safety Monitoring Committee and member of the Clinical Expert Panel. Deborah is also a co-author of the Cervical Screening Guidelines, including the recent updates to the self-collection pathways.
